Washington, DC is a cosmopolitan and generally very safe city, with clean and easy to use public transportation. Visitors unaccustomed to the normal precautions of urban life, however, should use common sense when navigating through the city. Keep your valuables (wallet, jewelry, phones, cameras, etc.) discreetly secure. Be aware of your surroundings, stay with your travel companions, and avoid sparsely traveled areas late at night.
